Just hearing the word “negotiate” gives me a twinge of anxiety. It seems fraught with striving and tension. I’ve heard we are supposed to focus on win-win solutions. When faced with an issue to negotiate, I wonder what win-win is supposed to look like and we might arrive there.
I think much of my anxiety around the idea of negotiating has to do with not knowing what the other person wants or in some c situations thinking I know what he/she wants and not liking it. What would happen if I approached negotiation from a place of curiosity? Asking myself and my negotiating partner what do we want to create?
Being that the word negotiation creates so much tension for me. I’m making a substitution.
